18th & GRAND: THE OLYMPIC AUDITORIUM BOXING EXPO

Join us as we celebrate L.A.’s biggest boxing stars with two outstanding panels and an expo featuring boxing legends and other vendors. Food and drink available for sale from La Parilla. In conjunction with LA Plaza’s exhibition “18th & Grand: The Olympic Auditorium.”

From the 1920s through the early 2000s, the Olympic Auditorium was a hub of sports entertainment on the West Coast. The “Sweet Science” of boxing was one of the pillars which made the venue popular with fans around the world.

Plática: The Olympic Auditorium and the Legacy of Aileen Eaton: Women in Charge | 1pm
Olympic promoter Aileen Eaton became business manager of the Olympic Auditorium in 1942, rebuilding the business of what was then a money-losing arena. The only woman in her sport, Eaton was a master promoter who developed championship talent and managed to fill an outdated, 10,000-seat venue for nearly forty years, a pioneer in sports entertainment.

LA Plaza CEO Leticia Buckley moderates a conversation with women in the sports and entertainment worlds who have also found success in male dominated fields, including Lisa Fancher, founder and owner of Frontier Records, Rita D’Albert, Producer of Lucha VaVoom, Graciela Casillas, World Champion boxer and kickboxer.

Plática: The Golden Era of Los Angeles Boxing: The Olympic vs. The Forum | 3pm
In the 1960s and 70s, with two major boxing arenas competing head-to-head, Los Angeles sports fans could see the greatest fighters in the world on a weekly basis. Specializing in talent born the neighborhoods of Southern California and Mexico, boxing thrived in L.A., launching stars like Olympic favorite Mando Ramos and Forum superstar Ruben Olivares, Danny “Little Red” Lopez and Bobby Chacon. Join 18th & Grand: The Olympic Auditorium co-curators Steve DeBro and Gene Aguilera, along with Carlos Palomino: Former World Welterweight Champion, and Alberto Davila: Former World Bantamweight Champion in a conversation about a golden era in L.A boxing history.

At 7 PM on August 23rd at the Los Feliz Theatre, we are happy to provide a screening of 18th & Grand: The Olympic Auditorium Story with our friends at American Cinematheque.

The Olympic Auditorium was a hub of visceral entertainment in Los Angeles for generations, with heroes and villains who often came from the neighborhoods of Southern California and Mexico. Told through the voices of wrestlers, boxers, skaters, and punk rockers, 18TH & GRAND dynamically recalls the larger-than-life characters who captured the imagination of the city and the world.

18TH & GRAND: THE OLYMPIC AUDITORIUM OPENING CELEBRATION

18th & Grand: The Olympic Auditorium is an immersive exhibition that encompasses both floors of the museum and cultural center and remembers characters from a disappearing world, from heroes to villains, connecting the venue to seminal events and cultural movements throughout L.A. history. Gathered from multiple collections the exhibit features distinctive objects, relics, and images, such as embroidered boxing robes, hand-stitched lucha masks, race-worn roller skates, illustrations, photography, film, oral histories, boxing posters, wrestling programs, punk rock flyers, art and more. The exhibition runs through May 12, 2024.

You are invited to attend the Opening Celebration of our newest exhibition with an afternoon of activities that are sure to delight and inspire. All events are open to the public. View the exhibition on both of LA Plaza’s temporary galleries, located on the first and second floors.

Live at the Olympic Auditorium! – Legendary Event Posters | Drop-In Art Workshop

The Olympic Auditorium hosted an array of thrilling events: from boxing, lucha libre matches, and roller derby, to punk rock concerts and música en vivo! What event do you imagine attending at this iconic event venue? Use specially designed stencils to unleash your imagination and design your very own event poster. Inspired by the rich history of this iconic community space in Los Angeles, this art workshop brings the past to life through screen printing. Workshop facilitated by:Ni Santas, an all womxn of color collective working to write their history through art, with responsibility to create socially conscious visual narratives. Ni Santas envisions creating a safe space by cultivating a community of womxn, free of judgement to nourish emerging artists. Limited capacity … arrive early!

Roundtable: 18th & Grand and the Mexican-American Experience

The Olympic Auditorium was the people’s venue, a place where Angelenos came together to enjoy intense, visceral sports and entertainment. It had a particularly strong connection to L.A.’s Mexican-American community who made up a majority of the fighters, skaters, and fans. Join L.A. Times columnist Gustavo Arellano, world champion boxer Carlos Palomino, wrestler Mando Guerrero, L.A. T-Bird roller derby star Honey Sanchez, along with guest co-curators Gene Aguilera and Steve DeBro, as they discuss the intersection between the Olympic Auditorium and the Mexican-American experience. 18th and Grand: The Olympic Auditorium is based on guest co-curator Steve DeBro’s Emmy Award-nominated documentary “18th & Grand: The Olympic Auditorium Story,” and inspired by the books of fellow guest co-curator, boxing author Gene Aguilera, including “Mexican-American Boxing in Los Angeles.” Steve will sign BluRays of the documentary and Olympic Auditorium tee shirts, and Gene will be signing his books.

KCRW Summer Nights with LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes featuring Jungle Fire

Meet the KCRW crew at LA Plaza for a brand-new Summer Nights! With sets from KCRW DJ José Galvan (6 to 7:30pm & 8:45 to 10pm) and Jungle Fire (7:30 to 8:45pm), food, beer garden, silk-screen printing, vendors and after-hours museum access until 8pm. Hailing from Los Angeles, Jungle Fire’s diverse musical and cultural backgrounds are a direct reflection of the landscape of our city. This local TropiFunk juggernaut pulls its influences from the music of legends such as Irakere, Ray Barretto, James Brown, Fela Kuti and Manu Dibango (just to name a few) while creating a melting pot of Afro-Caribbean and West African rhythms with heavy breakbeat funk that is as authentic as it is explosive to see live– did someone say dance party?

LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes presents 18th & Grand: The Olympic Auditorium, an exhibition recounting the 80-year history (1925-2005) of the Olympic Auditorium, the home for visceral entertainment in Los Angeles and a historic venue that shaped Los Angeles’ past and influenced its future. From the dangerous combat of boxing to the dramatic theatricality of wrestling, roller derby, and music, the gritty punch palace at the corner of 18th Street and Grand Avenue distilled the beauty and brutality of a divided city.

The National Boxing Hall of Fame is inducting its Class of 2023 on April 23rd, 2023 at The Quiet Cannon Crystal Ballroom in Montebello, California. We’re pleased to announce that their award for “Best Documentary of the Year” is being given to 18TH & GRAND: THE OLYMPIC AUDITORIUM STORY. Director Stephen DeBro will be on hand at the Hall of Fame ceremony to accept the award.

18th & Grand: The Olympic Auditorium Story tells the story of L.A.’s historic fight palace through the story of Aileen Eaton, the impresaria who managed the mayhem for nearly four decades. Using the voices of fighters, wrestlers, musicians and insiders, including Lupe Pintor, Julio César Chávez, Carlos Palomino, Jimmy Lennon Jr. and Don Chargin, among many others, the film reveals how the Olympic was part of the fabric of the city and connects it to the social movements of its time.

“I’m thrilled that the boxing community and the National Boxing Hall of Fame have recognized this film, and honored to be part of a class that includes so many boxers who battled in the ring at the Olympic.” Boxers being inducted in the Class of ‘23 who fought at the Olympic include Hector “Macho” Camacho, Roberto Duran, Art Frias (undefeated in 21 bouts at the Olympic) Luis “Yori Boy” Campas, Gabriel Ruelas, Jeff “The Tasmanian Devil” Bumpus and Bridgett “Baby Doll” Riley. 18TH & GRAND LAEMMLE EVENT SCREENING SERIES MARCH 8-10, 2022

18th & Grand: The Olympic Auditorium Story makes its long-awaited indoor screening debut in a series of unique events at Laemmle Theatres across Los Angeles on March 8, 9, and 10. March 8 at Laemmle’s Royal has a boxing theme, with special guests announcer Jimmy Lennon Jr., boxer Frankie Duarte, manager Sam Watson, and author Gene Aguilera participating in an after-show Q&A. At Laemmle’s Noho7 on March 9, the theme will be roller derby, with guest skaters Honey Sanchez, Larry Lewis, and announcer Danny Wolf. On the 10th at Laemmle’s Pasadena Playhouse, Olympic Auditorium wrestling will be the Q&A subject, with grappler Mando Guerrero and historian Rock Rims. Don’t miss out on these once-in-a-lifetime screenings.
